RIDING OVER VALE AND HILL:

We are very lucky living where we do. We are close enough to civilisation to benefit from all the services and facilities that it brings, yet remote enough to enjoy all the peace and quiet that living at Longham provides. It also gives us tremendous scope to provide our guests with an unlimited amount of riding depending on their ability. One can ride around our own land at Longham through the fields and woods and along bridleways and away. The scenery is breathtaking. This ride helps us to assess the ability of our guests so we can match them with the horse we feel will give them the best possible enjoyment during their time with us. We tend to try and ride out here when our guests arrive on the Friday evening.

Dave has lived around these parts all his life. He knows most of it like the back of his hand and is therefore ideally suited to be your guide.
We are right on the edge of Exmoor National Park which in our opinion is one of the most beautiful places in the world. We can take you to places known only to those that have lived on Exmoor all their lives.

Whilst out on a day's ride it is possible to be on Dunkery Beacon (the highest point in Somerset) in the morning and after riding down through Horner, Stoke Coomb and out over Leigh Hill you can be beside the sea at Porlock Weir by afternoon. You can also explore Exmoor Forest which encompasses over 16,000 acres of unspoilt wilderness. There are no houses or buildings of any sort in it, no roads poles or pylons. Surprisingly, considering its name, it also has very few trees.

For more fearless riders we can go out onto the Chains. A vast area of wet lands that is the source of the 3 main rivers of Exmoor, the Barle and the Exe merge at Blackpool and run to the sea at Exmouth, and the Lyn which runs to the Bristol Channel at Lynmouth. This is very challenging terrain at any time of the year due to the wet riding conditions.

We can explore Anstey and Molland Common, cross the Barle valley at the famous Tarr Steps Bridge. We can explore Winsford Hill then drop into the Exe Valley and end our ride at the Royal Oak Inn at Winsford Village all in the same ride.

If you want to travel a little further afield, only an hour away in the lorry are the Quantock Hills. This is a range of hills rising just west of Taunton running along the coastline of the Bristol Channel and dropping down to the sea just east of Minehead. The scenery here is breathtaking and at the highest point of the Quantocks (Wills Neck which is over 1300 feet above sea level) on a clear day one can see the south coast of Wales over one shoulder and by turning slightly, Dartmoor over the other.
